This clinical white paper introduces MPI+, a Samsung-developed tool that automates the measurement of the Fetal Right Ventricular Myocardial Performance Index (RV MPI) using fetal heart ultrasound and pulsed-wave Doppler imaging. Accurate assessment of fetal cardiac function, particularly right ventricular function, is crucial in identifying conditions like intrauterine growth restriction and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.
In this prospective study, 70 normal singleton pregnancies between 20 and 24 weeks of gestation were examined using HERA W10 ultrasound systems. MPI+ works by automatically synchronizing RV inflow and outflow waveforms using pulmonary valve closure clicks and calculating the Mod-MPI, including its components: isovolumetric contraction time (ICT), isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT), and ejection time (ET).
Compared to manual measurement, MPI+ demonstrated superior intra- and inter-operator reproducibility. The automated approach reduced operator dependency and minimized variability, making MPI+ a reliable solution for routine clinical use. By streamlining the process, MPI+ allows practitioners—even those less familiar with fetal cardiac function analysis—to accurately measure the fetal RV MPI using standard fetal heart ultrasound.
This automation represents a significant step forward in fetal echocardiography by providing clinicians with reproducible, consistent data that supports early diagnosis and monitoring of fetal cardiac health.
