This white paper reviews the use of AI-assisted tools in routine obstetric ultrasound, focusing on Live ViewAssist™ and QualityCheck. Obstetric ultrasound examinations require accurate acquisition of standardized fetal planes to support fetal biometry, anatomical assessment, and fetal heart evaluation, which traditionally involves multiple manual steps during scanning.
Live ViewAssist™ is described as a deep learning–based function that operates during live scanning to recognize predefined fetal planes. When acceptable image quality is detected, the system can automatically annotate anatomical structures, perform measurements, and store images without the need to freeze the scan. Examiners can select which functions are applied and must review and approve images and measurements before final storage.
QualityCheck is presented as an AI-based image quality assessment tool that evaluates acquired images by identifying required anatomical landmarks according to international guidelines. Images meeting all criteria are classified as optimal, while images with missing landmarks are identified as suboptimal. QualityCheck can be used independently or as part of Live ViewAssist™.
The paper reports agreement between clinician assessment and QualityCheck evaluation for key fetal planes used in fetal biometry, including the transthalamic plane, abdominal circumference, and femur length. Automated labeling and fetal heart measurements were completed rapidly during live scanning. The authors conclude that AI-assisted obstetric ultrasound can support workflow efficiency and standardization, while emphasizing the continued need for correct probe handling and human review.
