Advanced 3D ultrasound mapping for uterine fibroids: Bridging the communication gap between ultrasound examiner, patient, and surgeon

Key Highlights

Review the clinical use of FibroidVue™ for 3D ultrasound mapping of uterine fibroids, including automatic segmentation, FIGO-based classification, preoperative planning, and visual communication among examiners, patients, and surgeons.

This white paper explores advanced 3D ultrasound mapping for uterine fibroids using FibroidVue™, a volumetric visualization technology available on compatible Samsung ultrasound systems, including HERA Z20. It examines how three-dimensional imaging can provide a structured view of fibroid number, size, location, and spatial relationships to the endometrial cavity and uterine serosa.

FibroidVue™ begins with 3D volume acquisition using an endovaginal transducer and automatically segments the uterus and endometrial cavity. Clinicians can navigate axial, sagittal, and coronal planes and map individual fibroids using single-click automatic detection, single-plane ellipse tracing, or dual-plane geometric definition, depending on lesion morphology and image characteristics.

The workflow supports FIGO-based classification and structured reporting by displaying each lesion in a color-coded 3D model. The pictorial report can document fibroid measurements, estimated volume, relationships to the endometrial cavity and serosal surface, and other anatomical information relevant to preoperative fibroid mapping.

Through representative clinical cases, the paper illustrates applications in multiple myomectomy, hysteroscopic planning, and complex gynecologic assessment. The uterine coronal view and three-dimensional reconstruction can provide clinicians with a shared visual reference when reviewing lesion distribution, surgical access, and fibroid-to-cavity relationships.

Beyond anatomical assessment, the paper focuses on communication among the ultrasound examiner, patient, and surgeon. A visually intuitive fibroid map may help explain imaging findings to patients, support informed discussions about treatment planning, and provide the surgical team with a clearer representation of lesion number, location, and classification.

FibroidVue™ is presented as a tool for more standardized 3D ultrasound mapping and visual reporting of uterine fibroids. The features described may not be available in all markets, and healthcare professionals should use their own clinical judgment when interpreting imaging findings and making patient management decisions.
