This report introduces LaborAssist™, a Samsung Medison ultrasound-based tool that provides quantitative and objective data on fetal head progression during labor.
Traditionally, fetal station and head position have been assessed through digital examinations, which are subjective, uncomfortable, and prone to interobserver variability. LaborAssist™ leverages intrapartum transperineal ultrasound to measure key parameters such as the angle of progression (AoP) and fetal head direction, providing clear, accurate, and reproducible data to guide delivery decisions.
The tool automatically detects the pubic symphysis and fetal head outlines from ultrasound images, calculates AoP and head direction, and visualizes them intuitively with animations and charts. It also provides review features, demo videos, and history tracking, making it easier to explain labor progress to patients and their families.
In a clinical study, LaborAssist™ demonstrated a physician acceptance rate of over 98.5%, with its automated AoP measurements remaining within ±8° of manual measurements — well below the interobserver error margin. Measurement is completed in under 1.5 seconds, and the intuitive interface allows users to adjust and review data quickly.
By providing objective ultrasound data, LaborAssist™ helps reduce reliance on digital exams, minimizes discomfort, and supports optimal decision-making to reduce unnecessary cesarean sections and improve delivery outcomes.
