Role of intestinal ultrasound (IUS) for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Management

This webinar, presented by Prof. Filiz Akyüz, reviews the role of intestinal ultrasound in the management of inflammatory bowel disease. The session focuses on how intestinal ultrasound can be used as a non-invasive imaging tool to assess bowel inflammation and support clinical monitoring in patients with IBD.

The presentation outlines the principles of intestinal ultrasound and its application in routine clinical practice. Key ultrasound parameters used to evaluate bowel inflammation are discussed, including bowel wall thickness, wall stratification, vascularity, and motility. The session emphasizes how these findings can be interpreted in the context of disease activity.

The webinar addresses the use of intestinal ultrasound in both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Examples are used to illustrate how ultrasound findings may support assessment of disease extent and follow-up over time. The role of intestinal ultrasound in monitoring treatment response and identifying changes in inflammatory activity is also discussed.

Throughout the session, the advantages of intestinal ultrasound as a bedside, repeatable imaging modality are highlighted, along with practical considerations related to examiner experience and standardized scanning techniques. The presentation emphasizes that intestinal ultrasound should be interpreted alongside clinical findings and other diagnostic information.
